“In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: it goes on.” – Robert Frost

Lesson of the Week

My grandmom was one of the happiest people I knew. I didn’t know her very well, but I knew that she was a role model, and I knew that she was happy. For the last decade she has been blind, diabetic and in a wheelchair, which may bring to mind the image of a grumpy old woman knitting and yelling at some local kids for the racket, but she was one of the kindest people I know… mostly because she was happy. She never complained, she was rarely ever in a bad mood, and she was always, always smiling. At 92 this incredible woman passed yesterday morning, and I think the biggest thing I will remember from her is that her happiness made others happy. It was genuine, and it was small. Every little thing was something she made a choice to be happy about, and I think as we go through our days we all are given the option to choose, do we see something through rose colored glasses or not. And those moments of happiness can make others happy as well, the rose colored glasses are a community exhibit. People say that words can’t hurt you if you don’t let them, but we’re social creatures, and honestly words can hurt just as much as anything else. Especially our own words. And I believe that by consciously remembering not to hold yourself back or put yourself down, you can make every day a little better than a normal day, and make yourself and those around you happier. And at the end of the day, what more can we ask for but a happy life?
